Trained at Trinity College of Music, James has composed for theatre, dance, TV, animation and the concert hall, recently completing his first String Quartet, and has conducted music for opera, concerts, TV, films and CDs.
Since1995 he has worked with the Clod Ensemble on installation concerts and music theatre productions with a particular focus on contemporary repertoire and music with physical, visual or theatrical elements.
As a performer James has worked with Deborah Warner, Tom Morris, Struan Leslie, Melly Still, Johnathan Stone, Julian Crouch; as a conductor/ orchestrator with composers Murray Gold (BBC, C4), John Browne (ROH), Paul Clark, The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs, Welsh National Opera, and as an instrumentalist with Rambert Dance Company and bands The Jazz Cigarettes, The Blue Dogs and Heist as support for The Fall.
He has directed workshops for WNO, English Sinfonia, British Film Institute, Kube and Clod; has taught at Trinity College of Music, Universities of Chichester and Portsmouth and is an associate lecturer in Theatre Improvisation at University College Winchester.
James was a founder member of the London Guitar Trio (1995-98) premiering over 20 new works. He plays piano and percussion for contemporary classes at Laban, University of Surrey, University College Chichester, Adventures in Motion Pictures and Rambert Dance Company.
James first worked with Hofesh Shechter Company in 2009 and joined as musician for Political Mother in March 2010.
