East Wall is a long-term talent development project, which will culminate in a large-scale spectacle of dance and live music at the Tower of London as part of LIFT 2018.
Directed by, and featuring music composition by Hofesh, East Wall will bring together up and coming choreographers from East London, and a large cast of dancers, musicians and community participants from Tower Hamlets and surrounding boroughs to celebrate East London’s rich cultural heritage.
East Wall brings together a unique partnership between Hofesh Shechter Company and East London Dance, who started to work together in 2014. By joining forces with Historic Royal Palaces and LIFT, the partners have committed to supporting selected choreographers and to working with local groups through a wide-reaching youth engagement programme.
On 2nd July 2016, we celebrated one of the milestones in this long-term project in a one-off scratch performance high above the roof-tops of London. Hofesh curated a world of performance and installation with East London Dance’s most talented and exciting up-and-coming choreographers and dancers. The event marked the closing night of LIFT 2016 and an insight into the project to come in 2018.
East Wall is produced by Hofesh Shechter Company and East London Dance. Commissioned and presented by Historic Royal Palaces and LIFT.
East Wall is supported by Arts Council England and University of East London.
“East London Dance has a deep and rich history of nurturing, supporting and collaborating with bold early-career dance artists as well as creating art that reflects the ever evolving social and cultural matters that our communities face. As we call out to our community to take part in East Wall, we are delighted to be able to introduce wider audiences to the breadth of talent that east London has to offer.”
Polly Risbridger, Director of East London Dance
“East Wall is an invitation for people to come together. I can’t wait to meet all of these performers and to witness the artistry, dance styles, cultures, personality and dynamic energy of east London through them. I hope the experience can give them a sense of creative freedom that they can use as a way to connect with and understand each other.”
