Inside the Process
A
Hofesh Shechter Company Intensive
An exciting opportunity to explore the making of Shechter’s acclaimed all-female work The Art of Not Looking Back, working with original cast members.
This intensive is open to professional dancers who are looking to enrich their practice as well as dance students in full time vocational training courses.
Participants will work with a team of company dancers, beginning each day with class, followed by creative exploratory time. The dancers will share some of Hofesh’s process used in the making of this piece - improvisation work, visual imagery and creative tasks - all of which he uses to create, in his own words “a rich environment of feelings, from which interesting movement can come…”.
Intensive 1:
Tues 9th, Wed 10th, Thurs 11th April 10am – 2.30pm
Intensive 2:
Tues 9th, Wed 10th, Thurs 11th April 3.30pm – 8pm

The Art of Not Looking Back, was a departure for Hofesh; themes of female strength, brutality, vulnerability, and power run through this challenging work. “My starting questions for the piece were, ‘Can I confuse the victimised and the victimising elements? How many faces of a woman can I show, looked at through a man’s eyes?’ In this case mine.“ Hofesh Shechter
“The Art of Not Looking Back may be Hofesh Shechter’s first all-female work, but in its physical and emotional power it is as high-voltage as anything he has made for men. Striding the stage with their fists bunched, thrashing up a perfect storm of energy, the six dancers are recklessly, stridently full-on, as is everything else in this work.” Judith Mackrell, The Guardian 2009
“Hofesh never really touched on the subject matter with us, he never really told us what it was about. We didn’t discuss what it is, what it says it is…It was never part of the actual process. That made it easier for us to explore ourselves…and find what it was for us. The creative process was much more about discovering what and who we were as females, as women.” Winifred Burnett-Smith, original cast
